Friday, June 19, marked the 21st day of The People’s Movement of Milwaukee’s 200-day protest initiative to improve Milwaukee’s social health by demanding racial equality.
The People’s Movement of Milwaukee has used social media platforms to organize protests and reach out to potential vendors.
“Most of our events start with a Facebook post, and quickly gain community support and donations,” said Mariah Smith, The People’s Movement of Milwaukee’s Community Organizer.
The People’s Movement of Milwaukee’s 200-day initiative stems from previous tactics used in Milwaukee for fair housing practices.
In 1967 and 1968, community organizers took to the streets for 200 consecutive days, protesting until Milwaukee passed one of the strongest fair housing laws in the U.S.
The success of The People’s Movement of Milwaukee in predominantly white communities outside of Milwaukee shows the impact of increased exposure to the Black Lives Matter movement on social segregation in Wisconsin.
