Milwaukee Bucks players and an estimated 7,500 protesters joined the nation in marching against police brutality from the Fiserv Forum to Veterans Park on Sunday, June 7.
Milwaukee Bucks player Sterling Brown helped lead the protest by chanting the names of Black Americans killed by police misconduct such as George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, along with Milwaukee residents.
“We making something great happen, something positive happen, something that’s heard around the world,” Brown told protesters outside of the Fiserv Forum. “As we march today, let’s be loud, let’s be known.”
In 2018, Brown was tackled to the ground, tased, and arrested due to a parking violation outside a Milwaukee drug store. Brown was ticketed but not criminally charged. As Brown’s civil rights lawsuit against Milwaukee is still pending, his personal experience with police brutality echoes the purpose behind the Black Lives Matter initiative.
In 2019, a report from the Boston-based Crime and Justice Institute found that a disproportionate amount of police encounters and frisks were with Black people.
This event symbolized a united cry for change among Milwaukeeans struggling to get law enforcement to confront its long history of racial profiling, abuse of power, and lack of accountability.
