On Saturday, September 7th, 2019, Dana Perry and Rebuild You Incorporated hosted Be THEE Village, an event where a variety of Milwaukee professionals ranging from health care professionals, entrepreneurs, community leaders and firefighters came together with the common goal of strengthening and empowering our youth—specifically, young boys in the inner city.
The community program lives to empower Milwaukee’s youth through support and helpful resources that provide space to rebuild from within. Perry’s focus with the function was on mentorship and protection to ensure our boys can become the men they want to be.
To go along with the exciting atmosphere at Sherman Phoenix, children charmingly greeted attendees as they entered the Vibez Creative Arts Space wearing crowns fit for the young kings they are. The cheerful environment was completed with a photo booth like throne where kids and their families were able to get their picture taken with a printed copy instantly.
During the program, wonderful remarks were given by State Representative Kalan Haywood II., the youngest elected official in the state. He spoke to the group about running for office at just 19 years old and instructed, “Don’t wait to be great.” Other presentations included a jiu jitsu demonstration by former firefighter, Frederick Coleman, who owns Studio69 located in Sherman Phoenix and musical performances that took you to church and back.
Food was provided by the many black owned businesses in the marketplace including Buffalo Boss, Funky Fresh Spring Rolls as well as Sauce & Spice. The variety was a pleasant surprise and it all tasted incredible.
You can’t say Milwaukee doesn’t have free family events because I experienced a great one.
